Thrombotic Lesion Angioplasty

What is Angioplasty ?

Angioplasty is a minimally invasive medical procedure used to open blocked or narrowed arteries of the heart. It helps restore normal blood flow to the heart muscle and reduces the risk of heart attack.

This procedure is commonly performed after Angiography detects a blockage in the coronary arteries. During angioplasty, doctors use a small balloon to widen the artery and often place a stent (a small mesh tube) to keep the artery open.

Why is Angioplasty Needed ?

Doctors recommend angioplasty when the coronary arteries become blocked due to plaque buildup (fat, cholesterol, and other substances).

Common reasons include:

1. Severe chest pain (Angina)

2. Heart attack

3. Significant blockage in coronary arteries

4. Reduced blood flow to the heart

5. Failed improvement with medications

How is the Angioplasty Procedure Performed ?

The Angioplasty procedure usually takes 30 minutes to 1 hour and is performed in a cardiac catheterization laboratory.

1. Local anesthesia is given to numb the wrist or groin area.

2. A thin catheter is inserted into the artery.

3. The catheter is guided to the blocked coronary artery.

4. A small balloon attached to the catheter is inflated to open the blockage.

5. A stent is placed to keep the artery open permanently.
